A number of local cyclists recently travelled to the UK to take part in 10 and 25 mile time trials. Riding the L1015 10 mile course in Cumbria on Saturday, 11 September, Tom Black took the opportunity to fine tune his Commonwealth Games preparation by equalling Mark Cavendish’s Manx record in a time of 20:08 minutes.  This was good enough for second overall.  The event was won by Alistair Robinson of Team Leslie Bike Shop in a time of 19:56 minutes. Marty Warren and Gianni Epifani, both riding for Manx Viking Wheelers, were 16th and 24th respectively recording times of 20:59 minutes and 21:18 minutes.

Both Gianni and Marty travelled to South Wales on Sunday, 12 September to take part in the Port Talbot 25 on the R25/3L course which incorporated the Welsh 25 Championships. Marty put in a storming ride in blustery conditions stopping the clock on 52:09 minutes, just 4 seconds off the Manx record. Gianni put in a steady ride, recording a time of 53:44 minutes.

A team of seven riders from the Shoprite sponsored, Manx Viking Wheelers had a very successful day on Sunday 15th at the annual TLI (The League International) National Road Race Championships, held at Aldborough, North Yorkshire.

In perfect conditions, on a seven mile rolling circuit, they came away with a horde of medals and two National Champions, Thomas Mazzone was victorious in the Juniors and Rob Dooley took the M1 category, both had solid races and both finished in sprints. Mazzone won convincingly by two bike lengths in his race, but Dooley's sprint went right to the line with less than half a wheel in it at the flag.

On the day there were over 120 riders, racing in
their various age groups and split up into four separate races, the longest of which was 56 miles.

The team's only female rider, Laura Wasley, finished a good second in the Ladies under 40 race and another runners up spot went to Colum O'Shea in the under 23's.

There was a strong ride from Marty Warren in the M2 class. Fresh from his stage win in the Suir Valley 3 Day race in Ireland, he instigated a break away on lap two of the seven lap race, the group of eight riders stayed away until the finish, where Warren went early but tired slightly towards the line to come home in third after another very tight sprint.

Also finishing third in the Juniors category, and despite just recovering from a bad cold, was Adam Johnson. Gary Mazzone also finished at the back of the main bunch in eigth in the B class.

Another Manx competitor, racing on the day, in the same race as the Juniors, was Team Royal London 360's rider Josh Knights who also collected a National Jersey for himself.

Thanks go to Manx Viking Wheelers and Shoprite for funding the trip.

12 August 2010

The Microgaming Triathlon championships are coming up on Sunday 5th September.  This year the event includes an Open Water swim in the Mooragh Park Lake, and there are the options of either a Sprint or an Olympic distance race.

Sign on for Sunday’s Melrose 25 mile Time Trial is from 8am at Ballaugh Village Hall.  The hall can be found about 250m down from the village shop, on the right hand side, towards the Cronk. Parking is on the main road or along the road to Ballacrosha estate that runs alongside the hall at right angle to the main road. There is also a small amount of parking on the Hall's frontage. The course is a variation of the Wild Life course but turns left  at Sulby cross roads onto the Clannagh road to join the WLP course at Sandygate. It follows the WLP course until its return to Sandygate where you turn left onto the Clannagh road to a dead turn on the straight about 0.9 mile, return to Sandygate and rejoin the WLP course to finish at the usual finish at Ballacriy.

Andrew Roche continued his run of good form on the build up to the Commonwealth Games with a fantastic performance around the new, exciting and extremely tough 23 mile circuit taking in the climbs of Dalby and Grenaby. The event attracted most of the Island based top riders, with Roche circulating in 1.00.05 to take the top prize. Second on the day and also taking the top junior prize, was Joe Kelly of the Manx Viking Wheelers in a time of 1.03.00 and third place went to another Wheelers’ member Colum O’Shea only 6 seconds slower in 1.03.06. Christian Varley had an unfortunate off on the descent of the Sloc whilst holding second spot but fortunately, nothing but his pride was damaged on this occasion. First lady on the day was Jackie Lee in a very commendable 1.16.37 and the first veteran was Paul Kneen who is showing good form in his End 2 End preparation finishing in 1.05.32. As the sun shone and the wind eased, the riders set off on a loop around Patrick, Glen Maye, Dalby, Sloc, Colby, X 4 Ways, over Grenaby and sweeping around Solomon’s Corner to finish next to South Barrule. With all riders home safely a special mention must go to the young, newly crowned National U12 Champion, Owen Dudley who albeit with the odd tear in his eye, completed the course in 1.46.09, a fantastic achievement and surely a name to look out for in the future. A huge thank you must go to Microgaming who not only sponsor the national teams but who also provided the great prizes on the day.

29 June 2010 updated
Joe Kelly was a fine second in the recent Junior Race, held at Curborough Sprint Circuit near Lichfield. At 3/4 distance three riders broke away from the main bunch. Joe was then part of a splintered group of four riders that were chasing down the break away, as the race reached the final stages that chasing group was then further reduced to two riders as the pace was high. Joe and his fellow chasing partner caught the group with a couple of laps to go, and Joe went straight into the lead, closely followed by Simon Yates, who was one of the three original breakaways. They managed to build a lead of over ten seconds from the chasing pack. It came down to a final sprint to the finish, where Joe was just outgunned by Yates. Fellow Team IOM Rider Chris Nicholson finished in the main bunch, with Thomas Mazzone a further few minutes behind. Adam Johnson retired midway through due to the very hot temperature and intensity of the race pace. British Cycling Report

Gianni Epifani took part in the Burton and District Cycling Alliance 100 Mile Time Trial on Saturday, 12 June. The course on the A50 between Uttoxeter and Stoke on Trent was flat and conditions were favourable.  Gianni managed to come in well under the 4 hour barrier, with a time of 3hours 54minutes and 38seconds, which if ratified is a new native record. Gianni was 22nd in a field of 122, of which over a quarter failed to finish. The event was won by UTAG Yamaha.com's Julian Jenkinson in a time of 3 hours 37 minutes. Rumour has it that this was Gianni's last 100miler.  Well done on an excellent result.

Bikestyle Handicap Results: Race 1 and Race 2 Both these races were run in some of the worst weather conditions this year...pouring rain, driving wind and temperatures down to 6 degrees, so much for the summer!  The first race was dominated by the strength and pace of the scratch group who overhauled the remaining long markers toward the end of lap 3.  MVW Junior rider, Joe Kelly, took the win from a very strong field. The second race in the series was a more exciting affair with the handicapping altered significantly from Race 1. Long marker, EVCC Juvenile rider, Jamie Fletcher, hung on out on his own for a first ever victory with a tremendously gutsy ride to win from a fast closing bunch holding them off by just 4 seconds at the finish! This was a really impressive effort given that he had no help from other riders and the conditions were truly appalling.

Please note that Race 3 has been postponed from this Thursday to next Thursday 24 June.

Andrew Roche, riding for EVCC won today's Tour of the Middle road race held over the hilly Stuggadhoo course. He was part of a five man break early on in the race consisting of fellow club rider, Darren Bell and three MVW riders namely Bubbles, Elliot Baxter and Christian Varley.  The five riders managed to build up and maintain a lead of over three minutes on the chasing pack.  On the last lap Roche and Varley formed a breakaway pair as they approached Red Lion Hill junction. Roche made the all important break as they climbed Stuggadhoo hill for the final time and time trialled his way to victory, to win by a clear margin, over Varley.  Bubbles crossed the line in third place, out sprinting Bell and Baxter. Jonathon Cregeen was the first junior over the line.

TMT's Peter Kennaugh Snr and juvenile RL360 riders Jake Kelly and Alex Haddock made a break on the third lap of the B race and managed to keep the 16 strong chasing pack at bay for the rest of the race.  Peter crossed the line first followed by Jake and then Alex.  Eve O'Hare was the winning lady of the day.

The C race had a good entry of eight riders. Rob Dooley, an experienced road race rider recovering from a recent illness, rode with the group offering advice to the novice riders. Julian Sutton (EVCC) out sprinted juvenile RL360 riders Matt Davies and Andrew Reeday.

Cash prizes sponsored by MVW and Bikestyle sponsored goodie bags were presented to the winners of each category, the first junior and the first lady.  Thanks to the big team of helpers and marshals who assisted in making the event run as smoothly as it did.  And last but not least, MVW are grateful to Bubbles for the loan of the lead Elite Vehicles car for the A race.

Despite the closure of Richmond Hill, Sunday’s Tour of the Middle, the third in the 2010 BlackGraceCowley Road Race Series will take place however it will not be a two stage event as advertised.  The road race will start earlier at 8.30am in an attempt to avoid the anticipated heavier traffic.  Sign on will be from 7:45 to 8:15am at the Braaid Hall.  The A race will be 10 laps (approx 60miles) and the B race (42miles) will be 7 laps.  A C (approx 24miles) race is being offered to those new to racing.  If you have not entered the Road Race Series please send your TLI entries to Brian Johnson at Cintra, Alexandra Drive, Douglas, IM2 3QX by Thursday, 13 May.  Once again, the Wheelers are offering cash prizes to those placed first in each of the races, the first lady and the first Junior.

It was a successful weekend for Wheelers’ members – some (Andrew Cook, Steve Brennan, Honks and Roger Raatgever) took part in the Manx Tri Club’s first Triathlon of the year.

And several also took part in the Roy Killey Memorial Road Race.  Bubbles’ had his first A race win ever, with Darren Bell (EVCC) taking second place and Junior rider Adam Johnson taking third.  Tom Mazzone, Joe Kelly and Marty Warren (all MVW riders) were the next to cross the line.

It was nearly a double Wheelers win, but Scott Morgan (TMT) just managed to get ahead of Gary Mazzone in the bunch sprint of the B race.  RL 360 juvenile rider, Alex Haddock was the third rider  across the line in the B race. Photographs courtesy of Andrew Haddock.  Results

Congratulations to our April Member of the Month – Adam Johnson.  Adam has had some good rides this year, but his gutsy ride during the second Junior Road Race for the IOM Youth Tour, proved he was worthy of being named our Member of the Month and receives a £50 cheque.  Adam worked selflessly for Team IOM Migrogaming Team Member, Chris Nicholson who was able to take second place for that race.  Adam finished a very credible eighth.

Just a little reminder that there is NO 10 tonight.

29 April 2010

The Wheelers currently have some very talented young members, some of whom are competing in this weekend's IOM Youth Tour.  Joe Kelly, Tom Mazzone and Adam Johnson will be riding for Team Isle of Man Microgaming.  Warwick Sanderson and Jack Wolstencroft will be in MVW colours.

They have a tough weekend ahead of them starting off with a 1.29km time trial on Douglas Prom on Friday night.  Next is a 102.7km road race on closed roads around Peel on Saturday morning.  And then another 92.6km road race on the Bride Circuit on Sunday morning. The racing is likely to be extremely  competitive with 74 riders from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Holland entered in the Junior category.  Very best of luck to Joe, Tom, Adam, Warwick and Jack and all the other riders taking part in this weekend's racing!

The first of the Road Race Series for 2010, the Crowe Morgan Tour of the West will be taking place on Sunday, 25 April and is being hosted by the Manx Viking Wheelers Cycling Club. There will be the usual A and B races but for the first time, a C category race will be available for those new to road racing.  The start for both the A and B Races will be near the Western Swimming Pool entrance.  The A Race will be 5 laps (approx. 72 1/2 miles) and the B Race will be 3 laps (approx. 43 miles) of the usual course.  The start of the C Race will be at the Little London junction on the  Cronk-y-Voddy straight and the finish will be approximately 1 3/4 laps later (approx 23.5 miles). Curraghs Classic - Sunday, 11 April

Event HQ: Kirk Michael FC with sign on at 9.30am and start at 10am

Distance: 40 and 70 miles depending on rider's choice.  We have not been able to fully satisfy the risk issues regarding the course we want to use, therefore the event will be a non competitive endurance ride. It will still be a very hard day out. Course will be a 40 + mile ‘tour of the north’ followed by 5 laps of a 6 mile ‘finishing circuit’ which includes a 2 mile section through the Curraghs on unmade roads. Riders will be set of in groups of equal ability. The objective is for the groups to ride together for the duration.  The route will be marked however it will be up to the participants to ‘find their way’.  This will be a hard ride and I suggest that participants do not use their best carbon wheels!

Entrants should send their names to Steve Shimmin by email or phone 475341. Entry fees of £5 should be sent to 4 Birch Hill Gardens, IM3 4ET. Cheques made payable to Ellan Vannin CC.  Refreshments and grub after the ride. Hopefully Paris Roubaix will be on TV live.  The entry fee will be used to cover the costs of the hall and food etc. If there is a surplus, a donation will be made to the James Berry Memorial Fund.

Steve has asked that as many as possible turn out so that he can use this ride as a ‘working model’ on which to base a proper race in the future.

Well done to Manx Viking Wheelers' members Colum O'Shea, Tom Mazzone and Bubbles who took all the podium places in today's first event of the season.

Today's Handicap Road Race consisted of five laps over a 7.6 mile course based on the Jurby 10's course in chilly but sunny conditions. The race consisted of five groups going off at intervals of 2.5, 2, 2, 2 minutes respectively. By the end of the first lap the first group away still maintained a gap of over 1.5 minutes over the rest of the field, with the second group only leading the third by about 45 seconds, the fourth group were then a minute further down the road and the scratch group had yet to make in roads on the rest of the field.

At the end of lap two the second and third groups had come together, and were chasing down the leading group, whose advantage was less than thirty seconds, the fourth group were hot on their heels only twenty seconds further away, whilst the scratch group were still a good minute and a half behind. At the end of lap three the field was all together, with the exception of some slower riders who had been left in the wake of the leaders, the scratch group had fallen a further 30 seconds behind, so were trailing by 2 minutes. At the end of the penultimate lap, the positions remain unchanged and the leading group of over 20 riders pressed on. With less than a mile or so to go, Colum O'Shea broke away from the bunch after negotiating the Beehive for the last time and held on to win, easing down by over 5 metres. Bubbles sprinted clear of the chasing bunch for an excellent second, closely followed by Thomas Mazzone. Full results
